N.W.A. was the first Hip Hop group of which white parents were truly afraid. They were afraid of their scowls, their lyrics, and their name. What they were most afraid of, though, was how much their children loved the group. Unfortunately, adolescent white suburbanites were more attracted to the violent imagery and drug references in their lyrics than the band's warnings about the effects of police brutality on inner cities.
N.W.A. was the first West Coast Hip Hop act to break big nationally and paved the way for artist such as Tupac Shakur and Snoop Doggy Dogg.

After the release of Straight Outta Compton, The FBI sent a warning letter to Priority Record and N.W.A. regarding the song "Fuck tha Police." The song had received little radio play, and it is likely that the publicity from the FBI's letter boosted album sales.
